【Title】 Reclaiming Māori Food Sovereignty: Environment, Health and Wellbeing as One Interconnected

【Synopsis】 This presentation explores Indigenous food sovereignty from a Māori perspective, emphasizing the interconnectedness of environmental stewardship, food sovereignty, and Māori health outcomes. Māori approaches to food sovereignty are grounded in mana motuhake (self-determination), kaitiakitanga (guardianship), and whanaungatanga (relationships). For Māori, food sovereignty means the right to define and sustain kai (food) in ways that honor whakapapa (ancestral connections) to land, waters, and culture. Examples will demonstrate the integration of Western science and traditional knowledge systems, as well as the revitalization of traditional practices in contemporary contexts. The presentation also examines how Māori are asserting rangatiratanga (leadership, sovereignty) across supply chains, creating sustainable and climate-resilient food futures.
